The last refuge of the dumped minister.

Vanstone pens national song

The former Immigration Minister, Amanda Vanstone, has moved into songwriting.

Senator Vanstone has written a national song that she says could be sung alongside other tunes like Waltzing Matilda and the national anthem.

The words have been matched to the tune of Land of Hope and Glory.

Senator Vanstone says it is not designed to replace the national anthem.

“It’s important that we have additional songs that reflect the sorts of things that we value about Australia and the things that I value are that we recognise that we’re an immigration country, that other people were here before us, that together we’ve moved forward and built a fabulous nation,” she said.

Amanda went on to confide that she did share the fear experienced by many composers. "Nothing could be worse than being a one hit wonder, however I believe that I will avoid this by a quick follow up with the other patriotic song I have in me old kitbag, 'I still will call Australia Italia home'."

We do think that the fact that Amanda has spent 6 years working on this magnum opus is a bit of a worry. After 6 years THIS is what Mandy's come up with. Hardly "Tie me Refugee down Sport" or "The Stairway to Baxter".

Maybe we're being a bit harsh. Perhaps Cornelia Rau and Vivian Solon might be a bit more generous about Amanda's sterling efforts over the past few years.
